CMU

The Providence Pilots Men’s soccer team has closed out another busy weekend with three away matches, two of which ended in victory.

On October 5, the Pilots took a short trip to Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) and headed home with a 4–2 victory. The next day the team faced the University of Jamestown (in North Dakota) and endured a tough 0–5 loss. Remaining south of the border for one more day, the boys then trounced Trinity Bible College with a 5–0 win.

“One thing I always say to myself is never give up,” says player Alen Milas-Ibrahimovic. “Going into the game with the weather not on our side, the team didn’t let that distract them and I feel we all came out prepared and showed what Providence men’s soccer is about, scoring four goals in the first half. I felt I was ready to compete and that’s what I did, scoring two goals and creating more chances from the start not just for me but for my teammates as well.”

Head coach Mo Cato was also pleased with Providence’s performance on the field.

“The CMU game was key for us,” Cato says, “with conference standing implications and despite the weather conditions the boys did what they had to do and got the job done. After a tough loss to Jamestown, we responded against Trinity with an impressive performance. We were able to play our game, lots of possession, good movement of the ball, playing to feet and much more control of the midfield.”

Up next, the Pilots play host to the Assiniboine Community Cougars on Saturday, October 15. The Pilots have performed well in their previous two meetings against the Cougars and will look to sweep the season series.

Providence will head to Winnipeg for their final meeting with Les Rouges on Sunday, October 16. The team won their previous home match 4–3 but fell 1–2 on the road to Les Rouges. The Pilots hope to win the rubber match and climb the MCAC standings.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team had an up and down weekend with a 1–0 win against CMU but then a tough 2–10 loss against the University of Jamestown JV.

“The past two weeks have been insanely busy for our group, and we have been getting some good results with a five-game win streak,” says Tory Walker, coach of the women’s team. “This team has been dedicated to getting better each week and the results have shown. One big positive is that we have secured a playoff spot, so now we have the opportunity to make sure our players get proper rest and recovery heading into the next few weeks as we prepare for upcoming playoffs.”

Up next, on Saturday, October 15, the Pilots will host the Assiniboine Community College (ACU) Cougars. ACU has struggled against the Pilots with a 6–0 and 5–0 record.

Sunday, October 16 will mark the third and final regular season meeting between the Pilots and Les Rouges. The Pilots dropped their lone home match 0–3 to Les Rouges but evened the series with a 2–1 road victory. The Pilots will look to win the season series and capture top spot in the MCAC standings.
