The Niverville Nighthawks lost a close 2–0 contest with the Steinbach Pistons at home on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Nighthawks stay in fifth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 6–7–0.
Steinbach opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the game, and then both teams locked things down on the defensive side.
In the second and third periods, both teams had several power play chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Nighthawks pressed but couldn’t score and time eventually ran out.
Niverville’s Raiden LeGall stopped 33 shots in the loss.
“It was another tight loss, but there are some positives to take, like the willingness to stay in the fight and compete for every shift ahead of you,” says Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst. “I think we are our own enemy right now. Scoring goals is a hard thing to do when you don’t get to the net on a consistent basis with the shot or the puck in hand. To score goals, you need consistency on habits and pressure on the net.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with another home game on Friday night against the Winnipeg Freeze. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
“We just need to get back to the basics of getting to the net and creating opportunities for second and third chance opportunities that are there when you are at the net,” says Hirst. “We have to be willing to get into those trenches when things are not bouncing our way.”
