The Niverville Nighthawks earned a 5–2 win on Sunday night over the Winnipeg Freeze to maintain their position in the playoff race. With the win, the Nighthawks stay in fourth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 23–13–3.
Niverville opened the scoring early with a goal from Matteo Speranza, followed later in the period with a tally from Hayden Wheddon to put the team up 2–0.
Adam Vigfusson scored his twenty-fifth goal of the season to make it 3–0 in the second period before Winnipeg scored to get one back. The Freeze then scored early in the third period to make it 3–2.
That’s when Wheddon scored twice more to make it a hat trick.
Niverville’s new netminder, Jake Torget, stopped 20 shots in goal for the win in his Nighthawks debut.
“It was another good game for us tonight,” says Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst. “I was pleased with how we played, and we also had some great performances with the three-goal game from Hayden, who is a very hard-working player. And Jake was able to get the win in his first game with us.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with a road game against the Portage Terriers on Wednesday, January 22. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
