The Niverville Nighthawks won their second straight game on Saturday night at the CRRC with a big 4–1 win over the Neepawa Titans. With the win, the Nighthawks stay in fifth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 8–7–0.
It was a dominant game from start to finish for the home team. The Nighthawks scored three times in the opening frame, with goals from Matteo Speranza, Hayden Wheddon, and Adam Vigfusson.
Aiden Corbett then got another in the second period to make it 4–0 Nighthawks. To make it extra sweet, this one was short-handed.
In the final period, Neepawa got one back, but that’s as close as they would make it.
Niverville’s Austin Dubinsky stopped 27 shots in goal for the win.
“It was about playing responsible hockey with or without the puck, and we did that tonight,” says Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst, “riding waves of momentum throughout the game and taking what is available during those shifts and not getting into situations that favoured Neepawa. It’s a step in our maturity as a team.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with a road game on Thursday, October 31 against the Winnipeg Blues. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
“We played a great north game tonight, with getting pucks up quickly and putting the Titans on their heels,” says Hirst. “Getting the puck deep with pressure was key for our club tonight. Pushing pace and speed goes back to our identity as a team. We want to be fast, heavy on pucks, and resilient with our game plan. We checked all three of those off tonight, so we want to keep that going heading into next week.”
