The Niverville Nighthawks continued their recent domination in the MJHL with an impressive 5–2 win over the Winnipeg Freeze on Sunday evening at the CRRC. With the win, the Nighthawks stay in fourth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 27–13–3.
It was a mismatch right from the start, with the Nighthawks being the better team all night, outshooting their opposition by 46–17 over 60 minutes of play.
The Nighthawks jumped out to a 2–0 lead after quick goals from Evan Panzer and Dawson Zeller. Winnipeg then scored in the second period to make it 2–1, but it was all Nighthawks in the third period with tallies from Lucas Bertolin, Sean Williams, and Panzer again.
Winnipeg couldn’t muster a comeback, although they did get a second goal in the third period.
Niverville’s Jake Torget stopped 15 shots in goal for the win in his netminding debut for the Nighthawks.
“The winning mentality is building right now,” says head coach Dwight Hirst. “Capitalizing on the turnovers and jumping on them immediately was important tonight and being on top of the play in the offensive zone.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with a road game against the Swan Valley Stampeders on February 14. This Valentine’s Day tilt will get underway at 7:00 p.m.
