Two volunteer committees in Niverville, the Remembrance Day committee and the Communities in Bloom committee, joined forces this past spring to make some key and much-needed improvements to the cenotaph located in the cemetery on Main Street.
They removed shrubs, planted red flowers and poppy seeds, and installed a poppy garden design. Valleywest donated the soil. The Remembrance Day committee also repaired and painted the stucco on the cenotaph itself.
Thanks go out to the many volunteers who helped make this important project possible: Louise and Burt Hiebert, Lora Wachtendorf, Janice Keam, Russ Hiebert, Shaun McMahon, Bruce Friesen, and Shirley Hoult.
Hoult says there is another project in the works to offer luminaries (in the form of solar lights or ever-burning candles) for placement at each gravesite in the cemetery.
