The men’s soccer team at Providence spent the weekend on home turf. On Saturday, they went up against the Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars, and on Sunday they played the Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges.
Attacker Garreth Rayner scored his third goal of the season in minute 11 by deflecting younger brother Josh Rayner’s shot from outside the penalty area. Only six minutes later, midfielder and team captain Sean Kirkpatrick got his fifth goal of the season with an assist from the elder Rayner brother.
After the break attacker Rashard Hibbert completed Providence’s scoring with his fourth goal of the season. Hibbert’s goal in minute 74 came from a perfectly delivered cross from fullback Tate Teichgraber.
The Cougars remained scoreless throughout as Providence goalkeeper Santiago Vasquez got the shutout, resulting in a 3–0 win.
The victory kept Providence atop the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s soccer standings after their first ten games.
On Sunday, the Pilots were ready to continue their hard work. In minute 22, it was Garreth Rayner again for the only goal of the half.
Providence’s precise passing continued in the second half. Only two minutes in, defender Gurkarandeep Bhangu and Isaac Aman set the stage for Garreth Rayner to slide attacker Joel Umeh in on goal.
In minute 57, Umeh gave the assist to midfielder Johannes Barnes, who drove in his first goal of the season.
Not content with a three-goal lead, Kirkpatrick scored in minute 75 with another assist from Garreth Rayner.
Vasquez stood in goal for the Pilots again, stopping all six USB shots that came at him.
Meanwhile, in women’s soccer team, Providence absolutely crushed the ACC Cougars on Saturday with a final score of 11–0.
Striker Lauryn Mazda opened the scoring in minute 13, setting the stage for a flurry of follow-up goals.
Midfielder Paige Heide scored her seventh goal of the season in minute 18, followed six minutes later by a goal from striker Amieka de Klein. Shortly thereafter, the Pilots scored goals four and five courtesy of midfielders Holly Fullerton and Samantha Moffit.
Coming back from the half, the goals kept coming, this time from midfielders Christian Reimer and Kayla Miller, then from defender Laurianne Chaisson.
Despite tallying eight goals, the Pilots still had more in them. Rookie striker Serena Negrich was ready to score her seventh, eighth, and ninth goal of the season propelling the Pilots to the lopsided win.
Keeper Isabella Geith stopped three shots in the Pilots net, garnering her a fourth clean sheet of the season.
Negrich’s hat trick puts her in a tie with Brandon’s Brogan Henry in the race for the 2023 MCAC Golden Boot for women’s soccer.
Sunday then brought on yet another shutout for Providence soccer fans.
The game remained scoreless at the half, but after the break the women were on fire. Twenty-seven minutes into the second half, midfielder Madeline Marzin began the scoring as the Pilots peppered Les Rouges’ net with attempts.
Later in the half, defender Sara-Ashlee Chaves scored her first ever MCAC goal, followed shortly by a goal from Heide powering the Pilots to a 3–0 home win over St. Boniface.
The women’s team remains tied with the Brandon Bobcats for top spot in the league.
