The Niverville Nighthawks and Waywayseecappo Wolverines delivered a thrilling start to their semifinal series on Thursday night, with nearly 900 fans packing the CRRC to witness a high-energy playoff battle that lived up to expectations.
With a week off between games, both teams came in well-rested after sweeping their opening-round opponents. The pace was relentless from the opening puck drop and each side generated quality chances in the first minute.
Wolverines forward Sebastian Hicks broke in on a breakaway just 20 seconds into the game, but Niverville goaltender Austin Dubinsky made a beautiful right pad save to keep the contest scoreless.
Moments later, Waywayseecappo netminder Jase Wareham answered with a sharp shoulder stop on a redirected shot, setting the tone for what would become a goaltending duel.
Despite a flurry of Grade A chances at both ends, neither team could find the back of the net in the opening frame.
After what Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst described as “a feeling out period,” Niverville struck first early in the second. A perfectly executed three-on-one rush involving Merik Boles, Adam Vigfusson, and Hayden Wheddon ended with Wheddon burying a pass from Boles blocker-side on Wareham to give the home side a 1–0 lead.
Almost immediately after, Waywayseecappo had opportunities to respond with back-to-back power plays. But the penalty kill was outstanding, not allowing many quality chances—and when they did, the Wolverines couldn’t solve Dubinsky, who remained steady between the pipes.
Midway through the period, the Wolverines handed momentum back to Niverville when Rhett Perrin was assessed a four-minute spearing penalty. The Nighthawks pressed hard during the extended advantage, coming close to doubling their lead during a chaotic crease scramble, but Wareham’s diving effort kept it a one-goal game heading into the third.
The Wolverines finally broke through just over two minutes into the final frame. Noah Oughton capitalized after gathering a loose puck along the wall and fired a quick shot that caught Dubinsky off-guard, beating him over the shoulder to tie the game 1–1.
However, the deadlock didn’t last.
Just before the midpoint of the third, Niverville’s power play delivered the decisive blow. After a strong drive to the net by Loik Leduc forced a rebound, Vigfusson pounced on the loose puck at the top of the crease and buried it for his fourth goal of the playoffs, restoring the Nighthawks’ lead and ultimately sealing the 2–1 victory.
Dubinsky turned aside 24 shots in the win, while Wareham was outstanding in defeat with 34 saves. Niverville’s special teams proved to be a difference-maker, finishing one for five on the power play and a perfect three for three on the penalty kill.
Following the game, Hirst emphasized the importance of defensive structure and special teams in tight playoff contests.
“I thought our PK was fantastic tonight,” Hirst said. “Especially in playoffs, it’s how well do you play defensively? And how good are your special teams? Your best special teams has to be your penalty kill, and I thought for us it was tonight.”
Hirst was particularly pleased with his team’s defensive effort and ability to limit chances.
“Anytime you keep teams under 25 shots, that’s a good defensive effort,” he said. “And we were able to generate 36 shots, so that was good as well.”
The Nighthawks bench boss also highlighted his team’s comfort in close games.
“During the regular season we had a lot of one-goal games, and so we are very comfortable in those types of games.”
The series now shifts to Waywayseecappo for Game 2 on Saturday night, before returning to Niverville for Game 3 on Monday at the CRRC. Puck drop for both games are set for 7:30 p.m.
