The Providence University College (PUC) Pilots soccer season is in full swing. This past weekend, the women’s team ventured to Winnipeg to face off against the Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges.
The Pilots had won all five of their games so far, but they fell to USB 3–2 in this fast-paced Saturday afternoon game.
Les Rouges opened the scoring with a goal in minute 23. The Pilots nearly evened it up 10 minutes before halftime when midfielder Ava Temple set up rookie striker Mack Cheys with a clear path to the goal, but Cheys’s attempt was stopped.
Minutes after the second half of the game began, Les Rouges scored again, increasing their lead to 2–0.
The Pilots finally got their breakthrough in minute 79, with rookie midfielder Christian Reimer scored her second Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) goal.
Five minutes later, Province’s Serena Negrich evened the score.
With only minutes left, a tie game seemed inevitable, until USB managed a last-gasp goal to lift Les Rouges to the victory.
Providence outshot Les Rouges 17–6 and won eight corner kicks to USB’s three.
In men’s soccer action, the Pilots faced Les Rouges as well—and trounced them with a final score of 4–1.
Les Rouges’ only goal came in minute 25, giving them an early lead. Minutes before halftime, however, defender Nate Martin of Niverville scored his first MCAC goal to even up the score.
The Pilots were on fire in the second half. Defender Zach Harman scored his second goal of the season, and shortly afterward attacker Joel Umeh followed suit with his third goal in three matches.
Thirteen minutes before the final whistle, Providence got one more in the net from attacker Kian Minnaar, his first of the season.
The win improved Providence’s streak to five games undefeated, with a draw and a win coming in week five of the season. The Pilots and Les Rouges each managed six shots on goal while Providence outchanced the hosts on corner kicks by a count of four to one.
