The Niverville Nighthawks travelled to Selkirk Sunday night and came home with their second win of the preseason.
Once again, it was Niverville striking first. In his first game for the club, forward Mighton Johnson found the back of the net at 3:03 to put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard. The goal was assisted by Nathan Brown.
It wasn’t the first time the Johnson/Brown pair would team up to put points on the board.
The night was a relatively busy one for the officials, with 12 assessed penalties over the course of the game. And on Niverville’s first chance on the power play, Bryce Warkentine scored to make it 2–0. This time, the assist came from Kaycee Coyle.
Selkirk found their footing at the top of the second period, but just 10 seconds later the Johnson/Brown pair struck again to widen the Nighthawk’s lead.
The Steelers narrowed the gap with another goal at the end of the second, but then Bryce Warkentine came out hot in the third period, putting the game out of reach with his second tally on the evening. Ben Whitford got the assist.
The final score was 4–2.
Later in September, The Citizen will publish a more detailed recap of the preseason, including reflections from the players and coaching staff.
Preseason play will continue later this week when Selkirk comes to the CRRC for a rematch on Tuesday, September 12.
