Steinbach Gets the Best of Nighthawks

The Steinbach Pistons put on an impressive performance to swiftly dispatch the Niverville Nighthawks by a score of 7–1. With the loss, the Nighthawks move to third place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 6–3–1.

The Pistons scored twice in the first period, three times in the second period, and two more times in the third period.

Michael Debrito scored the lone goal for Niverville, and Keegan Gordon made 23 saves in goal.

“We had a couple of bad bounces for sure, but there weren’t seven bad bounces,” said Nighthawks head coach Kelvin Cech. “So the biggest thing was just not having a lot of time and space when we had the puck. It was a really fast game, and we had trouble managing things, and they capitalized on a lot of their opportunities.”

The Nighthawks outshot the Pistons by a 43 to 30 margin but were only able to generate one goal on the evening.

“We fired a lot of shots but didn’t have enough traffic or second chances,” said Cech. “Possession wise we had the puck a lot, which is encouraging, but just defensively we gave up too much.”

The Nighthawks are back in action tonight with a home game at the CRRC against the Portage Terriers. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.

“We need to be a lot better, as Portage is a great team. I’m excited to see what our guys can bring on the second half of the back-to-back.”
