With spring temperatures setting in throughout southern Manitoba, the snowpack is receding, ice is breaking up, and melt water is starting to flow. That means it’s time to change some of our winter habits.
“The Fire and EMS Service just wants to remind the public that the melt is going to cause ice in our lakes and ditches to change quickly,” says Keith Bueckert, Niverville’s fire chief.
Bueckert adds that water levels will sometimes change very rapidly—and that water is bound to be very cold.
“Shallow lakes and ditches will because deep water hazards,” he says. “Parents should talk to kids about the danger of thin ice and cold water. Also, adults should be good role models and not be out on thin ice.”
If any dangerous situations become apparent, Bueckert advises the public to call 911.
