Getting a head start on your New Year’s fitness goals may already be on your mind, and if so, Niverville Recreation and Wellness is offering two new programs to help you get more active.
Drumming for Fun and Fitness, one of two new adult programs launching in October, has already reached its capacity. The pilot program is a free four-week class that uses drumsticks and stability balls to create rhythms, offering a cardio workout that can appeal to people of all levels of fitness.
“The instructor is doing this for the first time and we are not charging for the class,” says Angela Janz, Niverville’s Recreation Director. “She took a course offered by Niverville Service to Seniors and wanted to share this fun option.”
Beginner Ballroom and Latin dance is also being offered in an eight-week block starting October 15. The program is run by Jedi Baker, an active instructor who teaches out of Ted Motyka Dance Studio. He also teaches at the Institute of Dance in both Steinbach and Portage la Prairie.
Baker, who has been teaching the basics of both ballroom and Latin dance for more than 12 years, will take couples through the beginner steps of the two dances. Couples can register for the eight-week block for $150 per couple or pay a $25 drop-in fee per pair. Single participants are also welcome to join the class. However, as this is the first time the program has been offered, they may need to learn the steps alone if there are no other singles present.
Janz says that there are always plans in the works to grow adult recreation opportunities in Niverville, with space being their biggest challenge.
“The only space we really have is the south end of the arena and the curling rink basement,” she says.
Although the Heritage Centre has donated their space for the ballroom classes, the availability and space of the arena and curling rink basement continues to pose problem.
“If the Community Resource Centre moves forward,” Janz adds, “there will be so many programs that can be added with the new spaces.”
