After a couple of tough losses, the Niverville Nighthawks got back in the win column on Saturday night with a dramatic 3–2 overtime victory at home over the Dauphin Kings. For the moment, the Nighthawks find themselves comfortably positioned in fourth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 30–15–3.
The Nighthawks jumped out to a 2–0 lead halfway through the game after goals from Matteo Speranza and Dawson Zeller.
Dauphin scored late in the second period to cut the lead in half and then got another goal early in the third period to tie it up.
The rest of the third period was scoreless and the game headed to overtime. Speranza was the hero of the night, finding the net to score his sixteenth goal of the season.
Niverville’s Austin Dubinsky stopped 34 shots in goal for the win.
“It was very important to get that win after losing a 2–0 lead,” says Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst. “We got away from our start and had too many highs and lows tonight, so I’m glad that we ended up on the high and won in overtime.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with another home game tonight, this time against the Winkler Flyers. The puck drops at 6:00 p.m.
“We need to keep our five-on-five game very similar against a top team like Winkler,” says Hirst. “Our special teams need to get it done for us if we’re going to beat them.”
