The entire southeast region is under a fire ban due to severe dry weather this spring coupled with recent high temperatures and strong winds. Fire bans are currently in place in the RM of Ritchot, the RM of Hanover, the RM of De Salaberry, and the Town of Niverville.
“Excessive dry weather coupled with high temperatures are making for dangerous fire burning conditions,” reads a notice from Niverville Fire Chief Keith Bueckert on May 7. “Niverville has ascertained that under the authority of By-law No. 650-07, there are no conditions under which fire permits can be issued.”
Similar bans have been effect in neighbouring municipalities for three to four weeks, with Ritchot having instituted a ban on April 9.
The bans apply to all open-air fires, including in fire pits and burning garden refuse and crop residue. Those who are found guilty of starting fires intentionally may be subject to fines and penalties. In Niverville, the bylaw officer will be patrolling the community in the coming days to enforce the ban.
In case of fire, please contact Emergency 911, which will alert your local fire department.
