RCMP: Rising Ritchot Crime Stats Nothing to Worry About

Staff Sergeant Guy Landreville of the St. Pierre RCMP detachment made a virtual presentation before Ritchot’s council on the morning of September 7.

The communication was a part of a routine quarterly summary which provides statistical analysis about crime within the RM. Wednesday’s presentation covered stats derived from the second quarter of 2022.

According to Landreville, calls to the RCMP office were up significantly between April and June in two specific areas of police monitoring. The first noteworthy area is that of alarms which are integrated into the police system.

“Our alarm calls are up,” said Landreville. “Basically of note is that we’ve had a lot of false alarms, and every time we do get a false alarm call it brings our stats up.”

The sergeant added that ten of the false alarm calls came from one residential address in the RM. But even if a call is suspected to be a false alarm, protocol requires a new file to be opened, he said.

Reported crimes against persons was another area that saw a significant increase in the second quarter. A good number of these calls came from the communities of Ste. Agathe and Île-des-Chênes.

A total of ten reports were received by the RCMP for Ste. Agathe. Eight of these were counts of assault related to one file.

A total of 17 files for crimes against persons were opened for Île-des-Chênes. Six of the reports were related to two of these files.

“Apart from that, the numbers actually look okay,” Landreville told council. “There’s nothing that jumps out at me that’s out of the ordinary or worrisome.”

Councillors Mamchuk and Boulanger inquired with Landreville regarding the progress being made on creating a more significant police presence in their communities.

Landreville was happy to report that his detachment recently acquired one new RCMP member and that two more cadets will be joining the staff at the St. Pierre detachment shortly.

“As soon as they’re trained up and ready to go, our human resources numbers are actually going to be looking pretty good,” Landreville concluded. “Visibility is always number one on our agenda, and as our numbers increase now, that is something that I think we can tackle [in Ritchot].”

As for Grande Pointe, Landreville indicated that the community is home to one of his new recruits, which should help provide a little added police visibility in the area.
